THE SHADOW OF THE WIND
LA SOMBRA DEL VIENTO
Chapter One · Capítulo Uno
A book, a boy, a city — and the beginning of a mystery.
A conversation begins with a story.

We focus on Daniel, his father, Barcelona and the Cemetery of Forgotten Books as starting points for talking about literature, memory, cities, books and identity.
The goal is not to study the novel as a traditional literature lesson. It is to use the story as a starting point to read, think and talk in English and Spanish.

SPOILER POLICY · POLÍTICA DE SPOILERS
This article focuses on Chapter One. We do not discuss later events of the novel.
BARCELONA · A CITY AFTER THE WAR
The story begins in Barcelona in the years following the Spanish Civil War. The city is not presented simply as a background. It contributes to the atmosphere of the story.
Streets, buildings, shadows, old books and silence create a world in which the past seems close to the present.
INSIDE THE CEMETERY OF FORGOTTEN BOOKS
Dentro del Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados
Daniel is taken by his father to a mysterious place filled with books. For a young boy, the experience is overwhelming.
The place feels like a library, an archive, a sanctuary and something else that is difficult to explain.
Daniel discovers thousands of forgotten books. He is told that he must choose one and take responsibility for it.
He chooses The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax.
The moment is important because the book is not presented simply as an object. It becomes a personal discovery.
Imagine the place before you describe it.
- Long stone arches
- Enormous shelves filled with old books
- Dust and shadows
- Small lamps and points of light
- Silent figures and statues
- Long corridors
- A feeling of mystery
Now ask yourself:
What makes a place feel mysterious?
Is it darkness? Silence? Architecture? History? Or is it the story we imagine behind the place?
SCENE TWO · ESCENA DOS
THE STREETS OF BARCELONA
Las calles de Barcelona
After the mysterious encounter with the books, Barcelona becomes more than a geographical location.
The city begins to exist in the reader's imagination: streets, old buildings, bookstores, churches, shadows and people.
This raises an interesting question:
Can a book change the way we see a real city?
Perhaps after reading a novel set in a city, we no longer see only buildings. We begin to imagine the lives that may have happened there.
WHEN THE CITY BECOMES PART OF THE STORY
Some novels use a city as a simple setting. Others make the city feel almost like a character.
Barcelona in The Shadow of the Wind belongs to the second kind. The atmosphere of the city helps create the emotional world of the story.
This is particularly interesting from an architectural perspective.
We often think of architecture as something physical: walls, streets, doors, windows, roofs and structures.
But cities also contain something less visible: memory.
BOOKS, MEMORY & IDENTITY
Why do we become attached to certain books?
Perhaps because a book can arrive at a particular moment in our lives. It can become associated with a person, a place, an age or a difficult experience.
A book can therefore become part of our personal memory.
A book can become part of someone's story.
DANIEL AND HIS FATHER · DANIEL Y SU PADRE
The relationship between Daniel and his father is another important element of the beginning of the novel.
The father does not simply take Daniel to a library. He introduces him to a world of books and gives him a responsibility.
This raises a broader question about how adults introduce children to culture.
What did an adult introduce you to that later became important in your life?

A BOOK THAT CHOOSES YOU
Daniel feels that the book almost chooses him.
Of course, a book cannot literally choose a person. But we sometimes experience books in that way.
We find a book at exactly the right moment. Its subject speaks to us. Its characters seem familiar. Its ideas stay in our minds.
Have you ever felt that a book found you at the right moment?

DESCRIBE A BOOK WITHOUT NAMING IT
Think of a book that has stayed with you.
Do not say its title. Instead, describe:
- where you discovered it
- what it was about
- what you remember most
- how it made you feel
- why you still remember it
Then let the other person guess the book.
ENGLISH ↔ ESPAÑOL
In Estructura y Palabra, English and Spanish are not two separate classrooms. They are two bridges into the same conversation.
You can begin in English and move naturally into Spanish. Another person may do the opposite. The important thing is not to translate every sentence.
The important thing is to keep the idea moving.

Daniel enters a world of forgotten books. We can enter another world through literature too: the world of another person, another city, another culture or another way of thinking.
