TOP OF THE HILL - LA CIMA DE LA COLINA

Imagine a glass tower in New York. Carpeted offices, constant air conditioning, white lights and a view of the city from high above.

From the outside, everything looks successful. But inside one of those offices, Michael Storr feels something very different.

He has a good salary, an important position and a comfortable life. Yet he feels increasingly disconnected from the world around him.

What happens when the life we have built no longer feels like our own?

READ → THINK → SPEAK → CONNECT
This is not a traditional literature lesson. The chapter is a starting point for thinking, speaking and connecting ideas in English and Spanish.
THE FIRST IMPRESSION · LA PRIMERA IMPRESIÓN

A man at the top

Michael Storr appears to have reached the top. Professionally, he is successful. His office represents security, status and achievement.

But the higher he rises professionally, the more distant he feels from something essential.

His problem is not poverty. It is not failure. It is not lack of opportunity.

His problem is that success has begun to feel like a kind of confinement.

THE CITY · LA CIUDAD

Comfort, control and artificial air

The city around Michael is efficient, organized and technologically advanced. Yet his relationship with it is becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

The air-conditioned office becomes more than a workplace. It becomes a symbol: a controlled environment where everything is predictable.

Outside the window, the city is enormous and alive. Inside, Michael feels trapped.

The higher he goes, the more he wants to escape.

Cuanto más alto llega, más desea escapar.

THE TURNING POINT · EL PUNTO DE QUIEBRE

The parachute jump

Then comes an experience completely different from the controlled world of the office: Michael's parachute jump.

The jump is not simply a sporting activity. It becomes a powerful contrast to his professional life.

In the office, everything is controlled. In the air, control disappears.

In the office, decisions are made according to rules and expectations. In the air, Michael experiences movement, risk and uncertainty.

For a moment, he feels completely present.

Risk gives him something comfort cannot give him.

SAFETY OR FREEDOM? · ¿SEGURIDAD O LIBERTAD?

Two different ideas of a good life

Michael's experience creates a conflict with his wife.

She values stability, predictability and safety. Michael begins to value something different: freedom, risk and the feeling of being completely alive.

Neither position is necessarily wrong.

That is what makes the conflict interesting.

One person sees risk as danger.
Another person sees risk as freedom.

Una persona ve el riesgo como peligro.
Otra persona ve el riesgo como libertad.

THE CENTRAL QUESTION · LA PREGUNTA CENTRAL

What do we need to feel alive?

The chapter raises a question that goes beyond Michael's particular situation.

What do you need in your life to feel truly alive?

Is it security? Family? Professional achievement? Adventure? Creativity? Physical activity? Travel? Friendship? Risk?

Perhaps the answer is different at different moments in our lives.

LOOK AGAIN · MIRA DE NUEVO

The hill is also a state of mind

The title can be read literally, but it also suggests a metaphor.

Being "at the top" normally suggests achievement. We imagine that reaching the top means winning, succeeding and finally becoming secure.

But what if the top is not the end of the journey?

What if reaching the top makes us ask whether we are climbing the right hill?

Sometimes the real question is not "How high have I climbed?" but "Why am I climbing?"

A veces la verdadera pregunta no es "¿Qué tan alto he llegado?", sino "¿Por qué estoy subiendo?"

THINK · PIENSA

The questions behind the story

Michael's situation gives us an opportunity to talk about our own lives. You do not have to agree with him.

In fact, disagreement can make the conversation more interesting.

  • Is professional success enough?
  • Can too much comfort become a problem?
  • Is risk necessary for a meaningful life?
  • Can a person change without changing their entire life?
  • How much of our life is shaped by other people's expectations?

ENGLISH ↔ ESPAÑOL

Two languages, one conversation

You do not need to translate every sentence.

You can begin in English, clarify an idea in Spanish, and return to English. The objective is communication, not linguistic perfection.

What is the hill you are climbing?

Michael asks us to look at success differently.

Perhaps the most important question is not whether we can reach the top, but whether the hill we are climbing is actually ours.

THE BIG IDEA · LA GRAN IDEA

Success gives us a position. Freedom gives us a reason to live.

FROM THE PAGE TO THE CONVERSATION
