the future of artificial intelligence — and whether we should slow down its development

Welcome to a special Discovery & Learning Masterclass! 🧠✨
Today we explore one of the most important conversations of our time: the future of artificial intelligence — and whether we should slow down to ensure safety, ethics, and responsibility.

📌 INTRODUCTION — Why This Topic Matters

Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, learn, communicate, and solve problems. From chatbots and image generators to advanced research systems, AI has become one of the most important technologies of our time. But its rapid growth has also raised important questions about safety and ethics.

In this English masterclass, you will read, discuss, and debate why some of the world’s leading AI voices believe we should slow down the development of extremely powerful AI systems. You will learn useful vocabulary, improve your reading comprehension, and practice expressing informed opinions on a topic that affects everyone.

This lesson is designed for intermediate and upper-intermediate learners (B1–B2 / B2–C1). It combines a real-world topic with language practice, critical thinking, and structured conversation. By the end, you will not only understand the debate about AI speed and safety, but also be able to participate in intelligent discussions about technology and society in English.

🎯 OBJECTIVE

Read, understand, analyze, and debate an informative text about AI development — building vocabulary, critical thinking, and confident speaking at two proficiency levels.

1️⃣ OPENING — Setting the Scene (5 minutes)

"Today we explore why some of the world’s leading AI voices say we should slow down advanced AI development. We will examine their arguments, weigh the risks, and discuss what this means for all of us."

📖 2️⃣ GUIDED READING — Two Levels (10 minutes)

🟢 B1–B2 Version

Several leaders in the artificial intelligence industry say companies should slow down the development of advanced AI systems.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, believes AI is becoming extremely powerful — and that moving too fast could create serious risks. Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Elon Musk (xAI) have agreed, stating that companies must be more careful and allow independent experts to evaluate new systems before release.

🔵 B2–C1 Version

A growing number of AI leaders are calling for a deliberate slowdown in frontier AI development.

Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, argues that current progress outpaces society’s ability to evaluate risks, regulate the technology, and ensure safety. His position gained support from Sam Altman and Elon Musk, who both acknowledged that external oversight and more cautious development may be necessary.

📝 3️⃣ KEY VOCABULARY — Tech & Ethics

English Español
Frontier AI IA de vanguardia / modelos de frontera
Oversight Supervisión, vigilancia independiente
Safeguards Medidas de protección
Self-improving systems Sistemas que se automejoran
Risk assessment Evaluación de riesgos
Ethical concerns Preocupaciones éticas
To outpace Avanzar más rápido que, superar
Authoritarian actors Actores autoritarios
Deliberate slowdown Desaceleración deliberada
External evaluators Evaluadores independientes / externos

🤔 4️⃣ COMPREHENSION & CRITICAL THINKING (10 minutes)

🟢 B1–B2 — Check Your Understanding

  1. Why does Amodei believe AI development should slow down?
  2. Which well-known figures agreed with his position?
  3. According to the text, what is missing from current AI development?
  4. What dangers could arise from moving too quickly?
  5. Why might slowing down be difficult or complicated?

🔵 B2–C1 — Go Deeper

  1. Can AI companies regulate themselves, or should governments create strict laws?
  2. What could happen if powerful AI is released without independent oversight?
  3. What are the risks of slowing down too much — for innovation, healthcare, or global competition?
  4. How can society balance technological progress with human safety?
  5. Should external experts have the power to stop an AI model from being released?

🗣️ 5️⃣ SPEAKING ACTIVITY — Structured Debate (15 minutes)

Role-Play: Two Perspectives

Group A — "We MUST Slow Down AI Development"
→ Focus: Safety, ethics, risk assessment, independent oversight, responsibility.

Group B — "We Should Keep Moving Forward"
→ Focus: Innovation, global competition, benefits in medicine and education, economic progress.

📋 Instructions

  • Each group prepares 3 strong arguments + 1 counterargument to respond to the opposing side.
  • Speak clearly and listen respectfully.
  • Use phrases like: "I agree, however…" / "On the other hand…" / "What matters most is…"
"Both innovation and safety are essential. The challenge is not choosing one over the other — it is finding the right balance between them."

✍️ 6️⃣ MINI WRITING — Express Your Opinion (5 minutes)

Task: Write 80–100 words answering:

"Do you think slowing down AI development is a good idea? Explain your opinion using one or two examples."

✏️ Try to use connecting phrases: I believe… / For example… / On the other hand… / Therefore…

🏆 7️⃣ CLOSING — Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 minutes)

"Artificial intelligence is an extraordinary tool — but great power requires great responsibility. Today we practiced analyzing complex ideas, expressing balanced opinions, and discussing the future in English. That is thinking, speaking, and growing together." 🌟
