CAN ARCHITECTURE
CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE?

¿PUEDE LA ARQUITECTURA CAMBIAR NUESTRA MANERA DE VIVIR?

Buildings do more than contain our lives.
They can influence what we do.

OUR METHOD · NUESTRO MÉTODO

READ → THINK → QUESTION → TALK

Read the idea. Think about your experience. Question what you see. Then talk about it.

Lee la idea. Piensa en tu experiencia. Cuestiona lo que observas. Después, conversa.

THE QUESTION · LA PREGUNTA

Do buildings influence our behavior?

Think about a school, a hospital, an office, a house or a public square. The way the space is organized affects how we move, where we stop, how we interact and sometimes even how we feel.

But how much power does architecture really have? Can a building change behavior — or does society simply adapt the building to what people already want?

EVERYDAY ARCHITECTURE · ARQUITECTURA COTIDIANA

We interact with architecture all day.

We rarely think about it, but architecture constantly gives us instructions.

DOORS · PUERTAS

They control access and create thresholds between spaces.

STAIRS · ESCALERAS

They encourage or discourage movement between levels.

Facilitan o dificultan el movimiento entre niveles.

SEATING · ASIENTOS

The arrangement of chairs can encourage conversation or separation.

LIGHT · LUZ

Light can make a space feel open, private, calm or active.

Does architecture give us freedom — or limit it?

Imagine a public space with no benches. People may continue walking instead of sitting.

Now imagine the same space with comfortable benches under trees. People may stay longer, talk, read or simply watch the city.

Architecture does not always tell us what to do. Sometimes it simply makes certain actions easier.

AT HOME · EN CASA

Can a house change family life?

Consider an open kitchen. It allows the person cooking to remain connected with people in the living area.

A separate kitchen creates a different relationship between cooking, privacy and social interaction.

Neither solution is automatically better. The important question is:

What kind of life does the space support?

¿Qué tipo de vida favorece ese espacio?

PUBLIC SPACE · ESPACIO PÚBLICO

A city can invite us to stay.

A successful public space is not only beautiful. It gives people reasons to use it.

Trees provide shade. Benches provide places to rest. Paths organize movement. Open areas allow different activities.

Los árboles proporcionan sombra. Las bancas ofrecen lugares para descansar. Los recorridos organizan el movimiento. Los espacios abiertos permiten distintas actividades.

When these elements work together, people may begin to appropriate the space and make it part of their everyday lives.

PEOPLE & SPACE · PERSONAS Y ESPACIO

Architecture can encourage connection.

A staircase can become a meeting point. A courtyard can create a shared center. A street can become more than a route from one place to another.

But architecture cannot create community by itself.

People must choose to use the space, trust one another and develop relationships.

Space can create opportunities for interaction.
People create the interaction.

El espacio puede crear oportunidades para interactuar.
Las personas crean la interacción.
A PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE · UNA MIRADA PROFESIONAL

What is the architect really designing?

Is an architect designing walls, floors, roofs and windows?

¿Un arquitecto diseña muros, pisos, techos y ventanas?

Or is the architect also designing movement, relationships, opportunities and experiences?

This question changes the way we look at architecture.

Instead of asking only: “What does the building look like?”

we can ask: “What happens here?”

THINK · PIENSA

Can bad architecture change behavior too?

If good design can encourage walking, meeting, resting and connecting, poorly designed spaces can discourage these activities.

An uncomfortable sidewalk may discourage walking. A dark public space may feel unsafe. A building without accessible routes may exclude people.

Design is never completely neutral.

El diseño nunca es completamente neutral.

QUESTION · PREGUNTA

What does the space around you make easier — or more difficult?

Look at a place you know well: your home, your street, your workplace, a park or a public building.

What behavior does the space encourage? What behavior does it discourage? And what would you change if you could?

¿Qué comportamiento favorece ese espacio? ¿Qué comportamiento dificulta? ¿Y qué cambiarías si pudieras hacerlo?

The best architectural questions are not only about buildings. They are about people.
