ART & ARCHITECTURE · ARTE Y ARQUITECTURA

WHAT MAKES A PLACE
FEEL LIKE HOME?

¿QUÉ HACE QUE UN LUGAR SE SIENTA COMO HOGAR?

A place is not only something we inhabit.
It is something we remember.

OUR METHOD · NUESTRO MÉTODO

READ → THINK → QUESTION → TALK

Read the idea. Think about a place you remember. Question what makes it meaningful. Then talk about your experience.

Lee la idea. Piensa en un lugar que recuerdes. Cuestiona qué lo hace significativo. Después, conversa sobre tu experiencia.

THE QUESTION · LA PREGUNTA

Why does one place feel familiar — and another does not?

Two rooms can have almost the same dimensions, the same materials and even the same furniture. Yet one may feel welcoming while the other feels cold.

Perhaps a sense of home is not created by architecture alone. Perhaps it is created by memory, people, sounds, light, smell, routine and emotion.

A PLACE BECOMES PERSONAL

A house is a physical structure. A home is something more difficult to define.

We can move into a new apartment and call it home. But sometimes it takes months or years before the place actually feels like ours.

And sometimes the opposite happens. We return to a place after many years and immediately feel something familiar.

The architecture may be the same, but we are no longer the same person.

FIVE ELEMENTS · CINCO ELEMENTOS

What makes a place feel like home?

1. MEMORY · MEMORIA

A place can become important because something happened there.

2. PEOPLE · PERSONAS

Often, we remember people more than buildings.

3. SOUND · SONIDO

A voice, a street vendor, music or traffic can become part of a place.

4. LIGHT · LUZ

Morning light and afternoon shadows can change the emotional character of a space.

5. ROUTINE · RUTINA

Repeated experiences can turn an ordinary place into a familiar one.

MEMORY · MEMORIA

We don't always remember places as they really were.

Memory changes architecture.

La memoria transforma la arquitectura.

A childhood street may seem enormous when we remember it decades later. A small room may become emotionally enormous because of the people who lived there.

Perhaps memory is another form of architecture.

Can a city feel like home?

Home does not necessarily mean a house.

Hogar no necesariamente significa una casa.

It can be a neighborhood, a street corner, a café, a park, a market, a school, a public square or even a particular route through the city.

For someone who has lived in a city for many years, the city can become a kind of extended home.

A city is not only a collection of buildings.
It is a collection of experiences.

THINK · PIENSA

Is home a place — or a relationship with a place?

Consider two people living in exactly the same apartment. One feels completely at home. The other wants to leave.

What makes the difference?

Architecture provides the setting. Human experience gives it meaning.

La arquitectura proporciona el escenario. La experiencia humana le da significado.

A PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE · UNA MIRADA PROFESIONAL

What can architects learn from the idea of home?

Architecture is often discussed in terms of space, structure, materials, function and aesthetics.

But people experience buildings through their bodies and their memories. They notice temperature, sound, distance, light, privacy, movement and the presence of other people.

A successful space is not necessarily the most spectacular one. Sometimes it is simply the place where people feel that they belong.

QUESTION · PREGUNTA

What makes a place meaningful to you?

Think of a place that is important in your life. It does not have to be beautiful, famous or architecturally significant.

What happened there? Who was there? What do you remember hearing, seeing or feeling?

¿Qué ocurrió allí? ¿Quién estaba allí? ¿Qué recuerdas haber escuchado, visto o sentido?

A place becomes meaningful when experience connects with memory.
